Happy Friday (in keeping with the situation)!

Happy Friday, everyone!

And yes, I know, it’s not a happy Friday for a lot of people. Fires and angst in some places, snow and angst in others … sickness, misery, sadness …

Life is like that sometimes! But y’know, you gotta keep your chin up, face the day, and just keep on keepin’ on …

Things will get better, eventually! And during the coming week, we’ll once again, as a nation, get a chance to take out some of our frustrations on a bunch of innocent birds!

Of course, there are always a few iconoclasts …

But for the most part, don’t we all enjoy sitting around the table with our families, enjoying a relaxing, drama-free time of peace and togetherness?

Well, whatever you decide to talk about, remember — Thanksgiving is just the beginning!

So there’ll be lots of other chances to interact with your loved ones, between now and that blessed morning, January 2, when you wake up from your multi-holiday-binge and slowly try to make your way back to Normal Life™ — whatever that may be for you.

But first, we gotta get through THIS one! Well, try to be positive, if you can!

Hey, whatever works for you! See you Monday for my last Post-Holiday Season Weigh-In! And remember … hang in there!

No weigh-in today — just a sad goodbye to a good friend

I was debating whether to do a weigh-in today or not. FWIW, I’ve been dutifully keeping track of it every day. It’s been relatively stable, so I’m sure it would have been a decent weigh-in.

However, today is not an ordinary Monday. It’s the saddest Monday we’ve had so far, here in the 50by60 household.

You see, last week, we finally made the decision to have our sweet 13-year-old cat Princess, who’s been suffering from nasal cancer, put out of her misery.

That’ll happen at around 3:00 this afternoon. And we’ve been really sad all week, counting down the days … the hours … and probably the minutes, later today. (Oh, and it’s also sad because it’s Mr. 50by60’s birthday today — not his most fun birthday, that’s for sure!)

And even though we know it’s the right decision, that doesn’t make it any easier. So — decision made — no weigh-in today. Just a photo of our pretty cat, who sometimes liked to sit on the desk next to me as I was writing these posts…

…along with a prayer that God will grant her a peaceful, painless end to her life.

And that someday we’ll see her again, under better circumstances.

So long, Princess. Thanks for taking such good care of us both, all these years. Good girl!

In the Bleak Midwinter: a midweek meditation

I had some reservations about doing this post, because I’ve settled into such a nice little routine with this blog — weigh-ins every Monday, and the Friday Five. Why rock the blogging boat?

But I know many of you are dealing with cold, wintry weather right now. And not too many years ago, I sat in a hotel room in Alamogordo, New Mexico, waiting for a break in the relentless, torrential rains that were ravaging the entire Southwest and playing havoc with my trip home.

Gloomy view of Super 8 parking lot, Alamogordo, NM

As I sat there, staring sadly out the window, wondering whether I’d ever see sunshine and blue skies again, I looked at my phone and Googled photo after photo of sunny, blue skies, and felt hope rising in my heart again. I began to believe that, yes, even though I couldn’t see it right now, there WAS sunshine, somewhere in the world, and I WOULD get through this storm, and get home, somehow, someway.

And — just a few days later — I was there!!

Casino Morongo — almost home!

So here I am now, in sunny Southern California, and maybe you’re stuck somewhere in the Midwest or the East Coast, needing a little of the same kind of comfort. The following photos are from the walks I did this past week, Tuesday and Friday. Both walks were in the beautiful Sepulveda Basin, in Encino, California. Enjoy!

Los Angeles River Trail detour

The “Little Grand Canyon” — aka “Oops! Part of the trail fell in the water!” I actually had to hold onto the edge of that fence post in the distance and pull my way around it back onto the detour — exciting!

Signs, rapids, and a very steep path down to the river’s edge, which I very prudently did NOT attempt!

At the end of the trail, a lovely little stream feeds into Lake Balboa. Great place to sit and meditate (but watch out for angry giant geese!)

Climbed this tiny little hill, felt like I’d scaled Mount Everest!

Hope you’ve enjoyed this brief interlude, fellow SAD sufferers! Just keep reminding yourself: spring IS on the way! Hang in there!
