Holy Week Without A Weigh-In, Batman!!

Good morning, everyone! Although technically, it’s “good evening,” since I’m actually writing this on Sunday evening, and just *scheduling* it for tomorrow morning. So whenever I say “today,” I mean “Monday,” which is really “tomorrow” for me “today.” So good morning (evening)!

time travel verbs

Anyway, just wanted to let you know there’s no weigh-in today tomorrow! Monday! because it’s the start of Holy Week. As I may or may not have mentioned, both Mr. 50by60 and I are cantors at our Byzantine Catholic church

babushka

and this is a busy busy busy week for us, starting this morning with a long service called “Bridegroom Matins,” after which there are MORE services every day, till we get to the weekend and the services are so long that they spill over into the next century, or so it seems.

bridegroom matins

Anyway, bottom line is, no weigh-in today (Monday!), and no posts besides this till after next week (aka “Bright Week”). Hope you have a blessed Pascha/Easter; or Passover, which also starts this Friday; or, if you’re not religious, a “nice week”!

Monday Weigh-In: The Gardening!

Good morning, everyone! Let’s get the weigh-in over with, shall we?

Whew, that’s a relief — a bit of a loss! My body still seems reluctant to settle for *either* the ’80s or the ’70s — teetering back and forth over the border for quite a while now!

teeter

Maybe I can keep it down with my newfound exercise regime — gardening! Yeah, I’ve learned how to operate our gas lawn mower, which with its balky pull-cord starter should provide a GREAT upper-body workout!

me mowing

Not to mention all the cardio from going back and forth, all over both the front AND back yards!

twirling

Also, I’ve been pulling a LOTTA weeds — and let me tell you folks with lush, green lawns a little secret: pulling weeds is ADDICTIVE so you definitely don’t want to get rid of them! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting a really good grip on that thick clump of burlock and pulling it JUST RIGHT till you feel that long, slender taproot loosening from the soil beneath … mmm!

sensual

Sorry, what was I thinkin’? Anyway, it’s fun AND it’s exercise! So go find some weeds to pull in YOUR neighborhood today! Your neighbors will be thrilled!

Have a great week, everyone!

Monday Weigh-In: Post 5-K Dream Mile Color Run Edition!

Yeah, yeah, the weight is up a little (again):

179.6
scalessmash

BUT I had a great time at my very first 5K this past Saturday!

Me at finish

This was the Dream Mile Color Run 5K Run/Walk, sponsored by Vibha, a “color run,” which means everyone got these little baggies full of colored powder (cornstarch with food coloring, I believe) which they threw on themselves, other people, dogs, the grass, the sidewalk …

race yellow

The Yellow Brick Road at Lake Balboa? Nah, just some leftovers from the Dream Mile Color Run!

It was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed my first (and hopefully not last) 5K run, although frankly it was more of a walk than a run for me. Especially when I got to Mile 1 and started meeting runners who’d turned around and were already headed back! At that point, I kinda figured I didn’t have to push myself too hard!

walking just keep

As it is, my finish time was a very respectable 55 minutes (55:07:5 according to the results at ItzAboutTime, the chip ID co that timed everybody) and most important, I DID NOT FINISH LAST, y’all! Nope, yours truly was finisher #163 out of 194! (And I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all those lovely 31 people behind me who graciously stopped to get a drink of water or use the Porta Potty, so I could feel like a winnah!)

porta potty race.jpg

So all in all, a great time was had by all, and probably the reason I wound up gaining weight is I rewarded myself a little too freely, especially the next morning at church when Mr. 50by60 and I were in charge of the coffee social at church and brought in wayyyy too many cupcakes and brownie bites…

homer brownie

But even if I didn’t lose any weight, I think it’s kinda cool that I’m even able to stagger through a full 5K, at any speed, don’t you? Maybe I’ll do another one someday! How about you? Have you ever done a 1K, 5K, 10K, or any other kinda K? Let me know in the comments!

And have a great Monday! (Oh by the way, remember it’s April 1st, so watch yer back!)

Monday: Weighin’ In With The Boys!

Good morning, everyone! Today’s weigh-in will be short & sweet (like me, tee hee!) ’cause I have an early appointment at everyone’s favorite car repair/parts store!

pep boys.jpg

What happened was that Thursday morning I was driving merrily down the street, headed for the gym, tra-la-la, not a care in the world, when suddenly, outta nowhere,

wham.jpg

some guy in a parked car opens his driver’s side door, and took out my side mirror! So I’m getting it replaced today. Fortunately, it turns out replacing mirrors is cheaper than I thought, plus it gives me a good excuse to spend some quality time in the most scintillating city on God’s green earth!

So anyway, here’s the weigh-in:

178.6
scalessmash

70s kicks

Minnesota Kicks, 1976

Oh sigh!! Yeah, it’s kinda “up” again. But y’know what? If people keep smashing bits & pieces of “Decrepit Blue,” I may just have to do more walking and biking, which should help! Win-win, right?

win win.jpg

Anyway, see ya later — I’m headed for that luxurious waiting room! Have a great day!

Monday Weigh-In: Happy Uncooperative Scales Day!

First, the weigh-in (for all you who are viewing it on a mobile site and don’t have time for all this meme nonsense, harrumph!):

176.6
70s scales
kicks2

Yay! That’s actually quite a lot of weight lost since last week!!

Which is a good thing — don’t think by the post title that I’m complaining! However, *yesterday* (Sunday) morning’s weigh-in was a scary 181.0, which means either:

  1. It’s just normal daily weight fluctuations,
    roller coaster.jpg
    OR —
  2. the scales have become sentient and are taunting us!
    scale liar.jpg

Yeah, I can’t think of any other explanations, can you? Plus Mr. 50by60 was disappointed by *his* weigh-in this morning, so y’know, it’s GOTTA be the scales, right? The uncooperative scales! We’ll have to do something about that, I think.

Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! How’s YOUR Monday goin’?

Monday Weigh-In: Post-Fartlek!

Good morning, everyone, and for those of you who are still struggling to wake up, welcome to Daylight Savings Time 2019!

timelord

We go through this every year, and it never gets easier, does it? Oh well … try to make the best of it! Remember, we’ll get that precious, precious hour returned to us in … oh, let’s see, eight months, I guess.

btfuture

Don’t worry, the time’ll just fly by! Meantime, how ’bout that weigh-in?

mighty fine

Not too shabby! And by the way, remember a couple of weeks ago when I did that post, “Five exercises that sound like they’re … er … something else!!“? Well, how in the world did I leave out FARTLEKS??

fartlek 2.jpg

I mean, I’ve actually being DOING them! Whenever I go out on my tentative runs — basically, walking for a while — then deciding to run as fast as I can from, say, that rock over there to that palm tree down there — then slowing back down to a walk again. I had no idea that was a “thing”! But apparently it is!

linus fartlek

If you want to do some fartlek training yourself, go for it! It’s easy and fun! And I’ve signed up for my very first 5K, the Dream Mile Color Run/Walk 2019, at the end of this month, so I’m hoping to use my newly discovered fartlek skills to possibly finish in less than a full hour!

Fartlek 1.jpg

It is, isn’t it? Feel free to say it to someone at work today, then chuckle as they threaten to bring you up on sexual harassment charges! It’s good, clean fun! Meanwhile, enjoy your Monday, and don’t worry — you WILL get used to this stupid time change (eventually)!

Clean Monday: Last Weigh-In Before Pascha!

Good morning, everyone! A happy and blessed “Clean Monday” to my Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic (aka “Orthodox Lite”) friends out there!

babushka

And rather than repeat myself ad nauseum, I’ll just refer you to LAST year’s Clean Monday blog post and let you go on about your day.

Meanwhile, without further adieux, here’s the weigh-in:

oh poo

Aw shucks … back in the ’80s! But hey — Lenten fasting is upon us! So obviously that’s a great opportunity to lose some weight … right?

…this is the fundamental basis of Lenten promises. Whatever we give up, we have to ensure that God is kept at the centre of our resolve, and that the primary purpose is to draw near to Him. I will decrease my indulgences or bad habits so that God can increase in glory. NOT: I will decrease my chocolate intake so that I can increase my confidence on the beach, popularity at school or likeness to the celebs.

Oh, OK — and well said! So on that note, whether your Lent starts today, or Wednesday, hope it’s spiritually profitable for you – and not “just another diet”!

Post-Road Trip, Pre-Lent Weigh-In

Good morning, everyone!

Meatfare Groundhog

Yes, that’s right — as I’ve occasionally mentioned in this blog before, I’m an Eastern Catholic (Byzantine, Ruthenian, Greek Catholic, or whatever). We’re simple folk with different ways, but we’re cool.

easternstress

Anyway, the main thing to know about us as it relates to this blog is that even though we’re Catholic, we follow the same basic traditions as the Eastern Orthodox. And yesterday was what we call “Meatfare,” or “Farewell, Meat!” (You militant vegans out there should appreciate that since it’s the total, polar opposite of “Meet your Meat.”)

meet meat

The idea is that instead of melodramatically going from feast (Mardi Gras) to famine (Ash Wednesday), we kinda slide into the whole fasting thing gently. This week, we give up meat. Next week, after Cheesefare Sunday, we give up … well … everything else, basically!

lent no soup for you.jpg

That’s right — our Lent officially starts two days BEFORE your Ash Wednesday!

endora

Anyway, you can read more about the whole Meatfare/Cheesefare Sundays thing here, if you’re so inclined. Meanwhile, I suppose I should get on with the whole weigh-in thing.

finally.jpg

Oh … wait … did I mention I was on a road trip last week? So that might have affected my weight? I mean, I did put the words “Post-Road Trip” in the post title and all, so I probably should at least mention it, right?

get on with it

Oh, all right!! Today’s weigh-in is, like people who don’t spout their political opinions to everyone they meet, whether they want to hear them or not (*cough* EVERY DAMN PERSON AT THE OSCARS *cough*), surprisingly neutral!

180.0
vo de o

That’s right — it’s EXACTLY the same as it was Monday, before I hit the road for beautiful, sunny Phoenix, Arizona!

Phoenix rain walk 1

And I did indulge in some non-diet-type foods at the hotel’s fabulous Continental Breakfast Bar.

So I’m actually pretty impressed that I managed to keep the numbers from wildly skyrocketing. I did do some walking (in between the torrential storms) so that probably helped.

umbrella.jpg

Anyway, that’s it! And I’m going out on a limb AND going on record (hmm, can’t seem to find a meme that combines those two images! how bizarre) to renew my pledge, before God and everybody, to start counting my calories again. To be completely honest, I’d slacked off a bit on actually writing everything down, and keeping a running total in my head. Now that may work for you super math geniuses, but y’know, I’m not one of those.

math2

So it’s back to pen(cil) and paper for me! Let’s see how that works out. Meanwhile, have a GREAT first week of pre-Lent, everyone! See you Friday for a brand-new Five!

Weigh-In: Post-Valentine Chocolate Overload Edition!

Welp, good morning, friends & neighbors! Time for my post-Valentine, pre-Road Trip weigh-in. Let’s get this over with quickly, shall we?

Today’s weigh-in is (gulp):

Sigh — up a little since last time!

Oh well, as mentioned above, I’m heading out on yet another one of my famous L.A.-Phoenix Road Trips, which consists mainly of trying to avoid being on the I-10 for any longer than absolutely necessary. Takes a lot longer, but it’s definitely doable, and way more scenic!

vacay cat

Still, what with all the recent rains we’ve had out here, some of my usual “longcuts” won’t be usable, so I’ll probably have to do the boring Freeway Slog most of the way this time. Yawn!! Oh well, the bright side of any Road Trip is — you  guessed it! — the Hotel Continental Breakfast!

breakfast

er … sorry … I meant, of course, the Visit with Family!

relatives.jpg

Which is just one of the many exciting things I’ll be doing in beautiful, not-at-all-boring Phoenix this week. I won’t be doing my Friday Five post, though, since Friday morning’s the day I get up early-early-early to start heading back. So you’ll just have to make this one do till next Monday.

Oh well, given that I’ve been super-late with my LAST two Friday Fives, I don’t think you’ll be too upset! Anyway, that’s the Weigh-In, and now I’m gonna get behind the wheel and take out my frustrations on the road!

Have a great week, everyone — see ya next Monday!

And don’t forget your booties, ’cause it’s COLD out there! Even here in sunny Southern California, it’s a brisk … oh, let’s see … 51 degrees Fahrenheit — brr!! Too cold for me to do anything but blog, I guess.

Oh yeah, and weigh myself … I guess … let’s see, it was supposed to be a big weight milestone today, too, wasn’t it? Hmm … let me just go wash my hair …
